Is Hyperfibre Worth It in NZ? Fibre 300 vs 1 Gbps vs 2 Gbps
Hyperfibre plans promising 2, 4 and even 8 gigabits per second are now available in most New Zealand cities. They are impressive on a speed test. Most households will never notice the difference. Here is how to work out which broadband speed you actually need.
How much internet speed a household really uses
A 4K Netflix stream needs about 15 to 25 Mbps. A video call needs 2 to 4 Mbps. A large game download will take whatever you give it, but that is a once-a-month event. A busy household with four people streaming, gaming and on calls at the same time rarely exceeds 150 Mbps in total.
That is why Fibre 300 is the sweet spot for most NZ homes: enough headroom for everyone at the lowest fibre price point. Compare current Fibre 300 plans on our broadband comparison.
When 1 Gbps or Hyperfibre is worth paying for
- You upload a lot. Video creators, photographers and anyone backing up large files benefit from the symmetrical speeds of Fibre 1000 and above, where uploads match downloads.
- Five or more heavy users. Flats and large families with several gamers and 4K TVs can justify 1 Gbps.
- You work from home with big data. Engineers, designers and developers moving multi-gigabyte files daily will feel the difference.
Outside those cases, the extra $20 to $50 a month for Hyperfibre buys a bigger number on a speed test and not much else.
The thing that matters more than your plan: Wi-Fi
Most slow-internet complaints are really slow Wi-Fi: an old router in a cupboard at the far end of the house. A $150 mesh system often does more for your experience than any plan upgrade. If a speed test on your phone in the lounge shows a fraction of what the plan promises, fix the Wi-Fi first.
How to compare broadband plans properly
Set the minimum speed you need in our broadband comparison, then sort by price. Watch for:
- Contract term: open term costs a little more per month but lets you leave when a better deal appears.
- Modem and setup fees, which can add $100 or more to a cheap plan in year one. Our table shows them.
- Bundle discounts with your power retailer, which are real but only worth it if the power plan itself is competitive.
